Given this was first published in 1962, it's a testament to Page's skill and knowledge how much is relevant today. It reads a bit like a scientific journal with almost every sentence making a point, slow going but a treasure trove.
The subtitle reads 'Plants and practices for a changing climate'. As I write this in spring 2020 we are well into a very dry spring with the climate modelling predictions of wet winters and dry summers playing out true to forecasts. The planting style Filippi describes couldn't be more germane to our current weather patterns.
Some real nuggets on quite technical subjects e.g. plant architecture and planting densities. And some interesting points on what appears to be a Kingsbury bugbear - longevity of garden perennials.
